The Connect: Would You Cut The Check? [3]

Something I’ve Wanted To Share For Quite Some Time Is About Maybe Once or Twice A Year I Come Across An Unknown, Unsigned or Independent Artist Who Is By Far Incredibly Talented & Pretty Much Ready To Go! Often I Have Asked To Either Interview Or Feature Their Projects And Most Of These Same Artists Have Now Progressed Into Some Of Your Favorite Entertainers. All That Studio Time…All That Grinding..But When It All Boils Down, You Either Have It…Or You Don’t! Still Working On The Commas Needed To Activate Mission: Mogul 😉 However, Within These Upcoming Series Are Artists Whom I’d Definitely Sign A Check Towards…Would You?

Hol Up: Music So Good You Forgot It Was Triflin! [1]

Have you ever been in love? I mean REAL love! (cue Queen Mary J) Co-habitation or sacred vowels of “I do?” Love when it’s right can be a beautiful thing, but even in the midst of all that beauty, judgement can be clouded. Choices will be decided. Mistakes could be made. I’m personally not a fan of cheating by any means. Why not just be single? However, I find myself more than often enjoying and singing lyrics that I ordinarily wouldn’t act on, nor condone lol. What ever happened to #respeck and #loyalty? Some of us just don’t care so choose on who you lovin wisely peeps! At any rate and whatever your stance…you have to admit that the following records are just sooooo good that you kind of forgot about the message. I DIG them all!…Let’s take a scroll shall we?
*******************************************************************************************************************

    1. Billy Paul– “Me & Mrs. Jones” -Meeeeeeeeee aaaaannnd Mrs., Mrs. Joooones!  We got a thiiiiing goin on!  Meeting everyday at the same cafe. Still gotta be careful tho real talk.               3. Shirley Murdock “As We Lay” – Lawd have mercy the morning sun done snuck up on us!  Got me running late for work.  I need time to process this.  You married too? Didn’t mean to hurt her fr fr. You still fine tho. [Kelly Price Killed This Joint]

4. Salt N Pepa“I’ll Take Your Man”– The original if I wanted him I could have him anthem…He aint even all that but don’t test me H**!

5. Joe“All The Things (Your Man Won’t Do)”- Say whaaattt?  Well I’m here for it all.  He doesn’t appreciate me, and he’s taking me for granted.  I can do so much better. Thank you for reminding me that I’m worth waaay more than gold. A diamond to be specific.

6. SWV” You’re The One”- I know that you’re somebody elses’ guy….but that makes no difference to me.  She aint treating you right and God don’t make mistakes.  I think it’s time you let me show you what a real woman is…or it can be an undercover romance.  Either way, no worries boo. I got you.

7. Public Announcement f Mz. LeLee“John Doe”– So we just gonna pretend this pager and phone aint goin off?  What you got goin on?  How you come up on on this cash?  Do you love me?…this aint about my affair we talkin bout yours right now.

8. Montell Jordan“Get It On Tonite”– I’m stepping out tonight, just not with you. Now as for you…  the all white fit is always a killer.  The dance floor is the way to my heart, and baby you haven’t missed a beat.

[CONCERT] Review: Why I’m Legit Excited About King Combs Tho!

image1-7

Let me first say that I was completely floored when I learned that the Bad Boy Reunion Concert decided to launch as a tour. Huge S/O to everybody who was flexing and made us all feel left out when they attended the New York joints! Rightfully so you certainly earned to. This is simply just one of those concerts you’re not allowed to miss. Primarily located in the south|west, it was only right I’d fall thru to the Las Vegas tour stop. I actually did myself one better & attended as media. I appreciate that opportunity most definitely. Thank you to the team, you know who you are! Although I wasn’t able to scream & do my Diddy dance to each set (I was working), I enjoyed every moment & thrived off the crowd’s energy around me. The DJ was live, that countdown ticker was ingenious, and we were left with surprise… after surprise… after surprise. The Notorious BIG Records with Visual Clips? Bell Biv Devoe? Shyne? DMX? Black Rob? Literally like “WHOA!” The roster in itself is simply legendary filled with nothing but timeless music. Diddy for starters. Queen Bee looked amazing. Faith’s vocals had me in awe. 112 was too smooth. Mase was the Mase we’ve always loved and you already know French had it #lit. Nelly touched down with a cameo, and I was super hype for the LOX. You had Total, Carl Thomas, the amazement just didn’t end! Now who have I missed?

Ohhhh but then Diddy decided to bring out his son, Christian, better known as “King Combs.” After he was announced to the stage, Diddy proceeded to let his son know he’d have to earn our respect & admiration. There were several thousands of us, a complete sold out arena in attendance.  I’m proud to say that he did just that! Combs, of course, easily reminds you of a Puff in his much younger days. I’m literally referring to the wardrobe and all. His brother Justin accompanied him for an energetic performance that I don’t think any of us saw coming. I had a slight glimpse from the BET Red Carpet this year, but the kid turned it up a few notches! The record was catchy, his stage presence was phenomenal, and the dance set made the entire audience erupt in applause & praise. He actually hit us with the choreographed moves just like a true entertainer, all the while holding the microphone with ease. Not a missed bar or step in sight. Call me crazy but…I’m actually enjoying this young artist a lot more with each performance.  I can’t wait for the new music to drop!  I think we can all agree that we would willingly pay for a well put together set such as Combs on any given day. There is nothing more exciting and refreshing than an artist enjoying the stage, doing what their primarily in business to do…invoke the appropriate emotion and Entertain!

Major salute to the Bad Boy 2.0 (can I call it that lol?) & King Combs. I look forward to the new music and the greatness that is sure to follow. He’s got some big shoes to fill among that label both past & present. From what I’ve personally seen, I’m more than confident he can get the job done & more! #MajorMoves

Jesse Williams Speech At BET Awards Continues To Spark Controversy; Petition Launched To Fire The Actor From Grey’s Anatomy

It’s been a week since actor Jesse Williams received The Humanitarian Award at the 2016 B.E.T. Awards, and while a large majority of viewers were moved by his speech of dedication to Black women, the injustice within our country, and more–others are deeming it racist or merely all talk. Backstage the media room demographics were made up of both women & men of all ethnicities and ages, yet all journalist hailing from northern, southern, western, and eastern regions. The room grew silent during his speech on stage as it did for many in the comfort of their own homes. What I interpreted was nothing short of what I’d expect and hope to hear coming from the recipient of such a prestigious award. Collectively it was a breath of fresh air for us all to say the least. The honor itself is administered to those who put forth action behind their efforts & movements often making an impact within a forum provided, or to which act of whom they genuinely choose to participate. When Jesse Williams arrived backstage to continue the conversation, he received a standing ovation as we were all proud to be within his presence. We were eager to hear more of his plans and the changes he’d hope would result from all of the groundwork laid, and his speech that evening. I knew that his words would draw in the much needed discussion, but never did I foresee it spiraling into so many levels of debate from social media to the latest. Change.org has always been one of my favorite platforms but it’s most recent petition received is one that I most definitely won’t be participating in. It’s title is documented as: Sign the petition to fire, Jesse Williams, from Grey’s Anatomy for racist rant. I find it more than disturbing that at an awards designed to celebrate Black elegance, matters, and achievements we are simply unable to gather and do just that. In fact, I’m quite surprised that their hasn’t been more of an outcry over the new mini-series “Roots” all over my timelines. Maybe I have finally removed the overly outspoken leaving me to be less subject to those of certain views unless I go looking. Jesse William’s speech wasn’t designed to incite a racist movement against people of non-color, so why are some looking for what simply isn’t there? It was a reminder to those within the Black community, especially those of affluence, to be more involved and most importantly proactive. He couldn’t have chosen a more perfect time to speak on values or principles that we haven’t always put forth until it’s time to react to an unfortunate event. We should all ensure we are doing our just part to give back, lend a hand, and help one another in anyway that we possibly can. We should be educating ourselves on our American Civil Rights so we can properly address matters before they become a #Blacklivesmatter. Jesse speech was not too racist for television nor does he nowhere near deserve to be fired from his sitcom. His speech was just all too REAL for the acceptance of those who are naive to the data, the facts, and the direction in which our country has many-a-ways to go. What a poor argument this “petition” presents https://www.change.org/p/abc-sign-petition-to-fire-jesse-williams-from-grey-s-anatomy-for-racist-rant. I’ll be watching ABC closely to see how it all unfolds.

Here is a video of the Jesse Williams Q&A with media backstage.

It wasn’t all about the speeches that night.  We managed to catch some interviews & candid photos along the red carpet. Check out a few of those below. If you missed the 2016 B.E.T. Awards be sure to check with your local service provider to watch the re-broadcast.

The Connect: Can I Stop People From Recycling My Ideas?

There’s a time and place for everything in all things blogging so I’ve come to the conclusion it’s time to address the jackaz of all trades. Coming from a huge advocate for entrepreneurial moves with all things considered, I’m starting to find it very disturbing that this generation is of the “Monkey See…Monkey Do.” For some reason we cannot wait for a creation to manifest only so we can borrow or steal, then recycle it as if it is our very own. There was a time when people took pride in being the first, the one, and the only. Now it’s kind of the cool thing to take all and run with it. Then we whole heartedly accept it. But wait–it’s not about who did it first, it’s about who did it better–there’s some but not all truth to this. There are always exceptions but blatancy doesn’t fall under this category. I remember getting in touch and hearing from, “Yung Onyx” back in the MySpace days. They had no problem with my name and actually said they loved it! For several reasons I can be led to believe it was because of the following: we had dialogue, I was R&B versus Hip Hop, and it became my nickname early on after its meaning as a rare gem; or black diamond. Not the infamous rap group (Not the strip clubs either). I’ve pretty much had everything from my radio broadcasts formats & show name, to lyrics, to t-shirts, to now even my own blogs taken right from underneath me. This week’s email I received that displayed one of my articles being “recreated” was kind of my final blow. So how do you stop people from recycling your ideas and making them their own? The bitter truth is you unfortunately can’t or at least not without a fight. None the less, take a moment to scan the following below to ensure you’re getting your just due.

• Research. Yes, research. Take some time out to look around a bit. Before I generate anything I try to make sure to google with a fine tooth comb. I want to be sure that there is nothing like mine or that what I am preparing or creating isn’t already out, available to the masses. This includes perhaps the name of your single or your stage name. How annoying to have so many songs with the same title, under & within the same category.

• Business. Copyrights, Trademarks, & Patents. Depending upon what the product is or how it’s being presented one or all may be necessary. The paperwork can be quite extensive so I would recommend consulting with someone who is qualified, as well as having experience with such documents. Also, although you are on the right track, please note that saying you have a Tax ID isn’t enough. For some odd reason people are beginning to think this is the end all be all. There are certain permits, licenses, and certifications needed for you to legitimately be doing and remain in business.

• Have the conversation when it’s deemed necessary. Sometimes it does call for a healthy communicative dialogue. We can’t both throw a Southern Central Splash Summer Fest & call it just that. Especially when I’ve invested in flyers, radio advertisements & more. This could be considered a form of infringement hence it displays someone is using the marketing tools of one event, to push its own agenda of furthering sales for an entirely different event. Grab a dictionary and switch it up.

• Stop posting and talking to those not involved. If you didn’t list out your entire plan than people wouldn’t have an opportunity to swoop thru before you could execute it. I actually hate seeing people say, “Watch what’s about to happen,” or “I’m on the phone with so & so we just talked about getting this or that done.” No, no, and no. Just get it done first! You might have had the best non profit idea with a celebrity endorsement but because you spilled it all, someone with longer pockets and a bigger reach beat you to it. Special thanks to you because they didn’t even have to research for sellers. They took the person you screenshot you had a call with and had the press release the following week.

• Verbal & Written Agreements. These didn’t used to always hold up in court well but from what I can see lately, they seem to be doing just fine. If someone is rightfully entitled to a situation and you are trying to cookie cutter them out, you may want to make sure there’s no paper trail to follow. It’s enough to at least begin the preceding or worth an attorney looking into further.

• Work harder. This is my absolute favorite one of them all. You are not the only person who writes music, blogs, starting a clothing line, or any form of business. My only question these days is who isn’t? However…just because you are not the only one who uses certain words, doesn’t mean you didn’t coin the phrase so to speak. It may even have stemmed back further than when you made its intial use, so yes there are two things that can help you to solidify your point. Paperwork of course, and then ensuring your work stands above and aside the rest. With these factors you can increase your chances of at least being known as the Don Dada (s/o to AlpokoDon) of it all. This is quite flattering to say the least.

Moral. Haters gon’ hate. Nah…that’s not it. Cheaters never prosper? Nope, still not it. Let’s just say this much. You are the Alpha and Omega of your business endeavors. You are the King or Queen to this ish. You are the original and there’s none like you. You can do all things thru—look here, if you did it before, then my G, you can do it again! It is certainly okay for others to be inspired. We prove to ourselves daily thru social media that great minds think alike. But this is only cliche and given when each person has actually decided to use their mind. Imagine that. No matter how much money or great the individual is, they are only as exceptional as their next carbon copy. Sometimes that alone is enough and it can be very disappointing. If I could leave you with any advice or motivation as it relates to the “lurk & copy crew,” just know that you will always have the upper hand. Only now you just have to start acting like it. It’s time that you get up off your feet, get out here in these streets, and go get what’s yours!
